Social Media: A Tool for Evangelism

Updated: Jan 24, 2022

I have lived in my home for almost 7 years now and I have had Mormons come to my door, I’ve had Jehovah’s Witnesses come to my door, I’ve had boy and girl scouts come to my door, but never once a Christian. Is this a problem of our current complacency? Do Christians believe that only missionaries have to preach Christ and when they preach, it’s only to people of other nations? Churches constantly state, “Come as you are,” but what are we doing to bring Christ to others in our day-to-day lives when people chose not to come at all?

Christians could walk door to door, like the original apostles, but is there a better way to evangelize? In our highly technological age, is there a better approach to evangelism? What can Christians do to impact the communities that we live in as well as world around us?

During the 2016 election, the mainstream media had insisted that all of their data showed that Hilary Clinton would win by a landslide and due to this, they were truly shocked with the end results. To this day, the mainstream media is still scratching their heads asking, how did we get it wrong?

It’s a simple answer really. People have realized that the mainstream media is pitching an agenda. The consumers that disagree with the pitched agenda have been looking to other resources for their information. With the development of social media and the ability to create websites cheaply, consumers could now receive their news from third party sources. The main stream media continued to poll their own audience, but didn’t account for the fact that the majority of the population was getting their information from other outlets. In essence, the 2016 presidential election was the realization that mainstream media has lost control and a new form of media is on the rise.

In the second quarter of 2018, Facebook alone had 2.23 billion active users. Think about it long and hard, 2.23 billion ACTIVE users. Every time a post is made public on Facebook, it has the potential to reach 2.23 billion people. I have a hard time understanding that number, so I always like to put things in perspective. 1 million in seconds is almost 12 days, whereas 1 billion seconds is almost 32 years. That’s a lot of individuals that can be reached with just a single post.

Now, the majority of Facebook users understand why, and how, that could be dangerous for our privacy, but as an evangelism tool, think about the impact Christians can have! We have already seen a decline in the mainstream media and a rise in social media in regards to where people get their information, but unlike the mainstream media, the common person has the ability to shape the news and information that is being presented. Jesus states in Matthew 28:19-20,

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (NIV)

What better way to do this today then to possibly reach 2.23 billion people with one post, or Tweet, or video.

Christians, we have been “politically corrected” and made ineffective by being forced into the closet. But I urge you brothers and sisters to use the free resources you have available to shape the world around you.

Jesus says in Matthew 5:13 that,

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled on. (NIV)

Christians are the salt of the earth, because salt preserves. As long as we are shaping the morals of the country, the preservation of morals and values will remain intact. However, if we lose our saltiness, then the world will no longer be preserved. It’s clear that Christians, or rather those that claim to be, have started to lose their saltiness. Simply look at the decline in the morals of this country and you can see that we have not done a good enough job.

However, we can use the resources that are available to us to preach the good news of the gospel and reach as many people as possible. It’s not too late for another revival for this country, and friends, the tools are in our hands. Are you willing to use them?
